Which Diet Should I Follow?

What diet should I follow?

I get this question a lot. ‘What is the diet for kidney disease?’ ‘What do you eat?’ ‘What should I do?’
And I totally understand, because of course you want to know what works.

But here’s the thing: asking me what diet you should follow is like asking me what clothes you should wear.
Without any context.
Should you wear a thick woollen jumper? No idea, is it cold? Do you feel the cold easily or not? Or are you sitting in a heated office? Maybe you’re allergic to wool…
How about jeans and a T-shirt? Sure, maybe. But is it raining? Is it windy? Are you going for a walk in the woods, doing winter sports or are you indoors all day?
You see where I’m going with this, right?

There is no one right outfit for everyone, every day, in every situation. It depends.
On the weather. On how you feel. On what you do. On what you like.
And it’s exactly the same with food.
It depends on:
– The season (you need different food in winter than in summer)
– Your digestion (is it strong or weak at the moment?)
– Your stage of life (what worked when you were 25 no longer works when you are 50)
– Your nature (do you get hot or cold easily? Are you sensitive to dryness or heaviness?)
– What is happening around you (stress, travel, the weather)
– Your symptoms or diagnoses (that alone changes everything)

Even if I found the perfect “outfit” for you

the perfect diet for you right now – it probably won’t work as well in a few months’ time when the weather or your digestion changes.

If I eat crackers with hummus, salad, popcorn, and ice cream in this cold winter, I am guaranteed to get farty and feel bloated.
If I make a stew with spices, root vegetables, and some stewing meat, mmm, just the idea makes me feel warm and cosy inside. Whereas in the summer, when it’s 35 degrees, I’m probably not in the mood for that…

What nourishes you in winter can slow you down in summer.

What helps when you’re 30 probably won’t help when you’re 60.
And if you have any complaints? Then there’s an extra layer to consider.

So if you’re wondering ‘which diet is right for me?’, think of it as the question ‘what should I wear?’.
The answer is: it depends. It depends on who you are, where you are, what is happening to you and what is happening around you.
That is why I offer individual consultations. To specifically address your situation. Your body. Your life. Your abilities.
Because there is no standard diet that is suitable for everyone. Just as there is no standard clothing that always works.

much love,
