Move Pain Free

A sore shoulder, a client who compensates without realising it, and the moment when silence reveals more than any exercise ever could. On the difference between enduring pain and moving pain-free.

One of my clients has been training...

at the gym for a while now, which is doing him good. He feels stronger, more in touch with his body, and more confident in what his body is capable of. But his shoulder started to play up, so he tried to take it a bit easier. A bit less weight, more focus, a slower pace, but nothing helped.

We’d discussed it before: move in a way that’s pain-free. But what I realised during our session is that, up until then, ‘pain-free’ had meant to him: ‘the sensations I’m prepared to tolerate’. Which is something quite different.

He discovered that if he actively pressed his back into the floor whilst moving his shoulder, it felt a lot more comfortable. He was pleased with this, because it worked. But I saw what was actually happening: he was compensating. He was creating a movement to get round the pain, and that sort of solution doesn’t solve anything; it merely shifts the problem elsewhere.

So I asked him: “Let go of your back, soften your body, move your shoulder from a relaxed body and notice what that feels like.”

For a moment...

there was hesitation, a slight resistance, and then he fell silent.

He moved slowly, with his full attention, and suddenly he could hear what he hadn’t been able to hear before. His pelvis wanting to move along, his back wanting to do something. His arm gently saying: ‘No further.’ In a surprised tone, he shared that only now did he realise the discomfort had been there much earlier than he’d acknowledged.

Afterwards, he felt so much better. His shoulder had a greater range of pain-free movement, and the experience and realisation that this was possible brought him peace.

Moving without pain requires more stillness than you might think.

It’s not about enduring less pain, but about making less noise so that you can hear what’s really there. And once you hear and respect that, your body will work with you in a completely different way.

The free starter kit also includes a recording of a therapeutic movement workshop, designed precisely to practise this kind of listening and experiencing.
