Sorry, I'm About to Ruin Yogurt and Fruit

Yogurt with fruit seems healthy - protein, probiotics, vitamins. But this popular combination creates digestive chaos. Learn why Ayurvedic food combining principles matter and what actually supports your digestion instead.

Who doesn't love yogurt with fresh fruit?

Maybe it’s your go-to breakfast. Or your favourite desert. The flavours work so well together, and it ticks all the boxes: it has protein, probiotics, fresh fruit. So that’s healthy, right?
I used to eat it all the time. Until my Ayurveda teacher said: “Here’s another episode of Ayurveda ruins everything.”
I was so bummed.

But when she explained it, it actually does make sense.

Here’s the problem: yogurt is dairy, and dairy is heavy to digest. Fruit, on the other hand, digests super easily, it’s really light.
Your digestion gets confused. It’s trying to process two completely different speeds at once. The fruit wants to move through quickly, but the yogurt is sitting there, needing time and heat to break down.

And timing matters too. In the morning, your digestive fire is just starting up. A cold blob of heavy dairy doesn’t help it get going – it smothers it. After a meal? Also not ideal – you’ve just eaten, your digestion is working, and now you’re throwing something cold and heavy on top.

So it doesn't digest well.

What’s the problem, you might think?
The problem is ama, which is undigested food that accumulates in your system. We all have some, but when it builds up, it creates a coating in your gut. This reduces nutrient absorption and blocks waste disposal.

Without proper waste disposal, things get worse and inflammation starts. Add in reduced nourishment from all that blocked absorption, and you get: bloating, food sensitivities, headaches, IBS, chronic lower back pain, perimenopause issues – the list goes on.
All while you thought you were eating so healthy.

This is where Ayurveda looks at food differently.

It’s not just about what you eat, but whether your body can actually digest it. Both the food’s digestibility AND your capacity to digest it matter.
So yes, I’m sorry if I just ruined your yogurt and fruit habit. But your body will thank you.

What works instead:
· Eat fruit alone, ideally in the morning like half an hour before a meal, never after because that’s the same issue.
· If you want yogurt, have it during the day when your digestion is strongest. It’s really tasty with some cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and maple or date syrup or honey, and some seeds or nuts can be nice add too.
· Have cooked oatmeal, baked eggs with veggies or anything else that is cooked for breakfast instead.

I’d love to hear how this lands for you.

much love,
