Workshop for one
Tasting spices together
Last Sunday I taught the first Ayurvedische Herfstkeuken workshop, the Dutch edition of Ayurveda’s Autumn Kitchen workshop.
One person had signed up. He’d told me in advance that he wasn’t sure he could make it, or maybe only for half of it. Honestly, in the days before I wondered whether to cancel. My enthusiasm dropped and thoughts ran through my head: Is it worth it? What kind of workshop has one participant?
A good one, it turned out.
We tasted all five spices together, no need to mute, because it was just the two of us. We tried fennel first, which is a gentle one, to wake up the tongue. Then we tasted coriander, cardamom, ginger (I did inhale that one just a bit too much…) and, as the interesting finale, clove. That is one you won’t forget once you’ve tasted it on your tongue, it has a special power.
In between we looked at what autumn can do in your body, and why a hot day or week asks something different of you than a windy or rainy one.
Just in time
Turned out he had 75 minutes and around minute 72 I thanked him for joining because we had made it through the whole workshop without rushing. Neither of us expected that.
With this one person, it wasn’t just me presenting and telling people what to do with everyone muted and raising hands, we had conversations. His questions gave direction to what he wanted to learn and memories and stories came up. There was room to explore the taste and discover what happened.
I closed my laptop with a big smile and having really enjoyed sharing the workshop this way one on one.
Creating something that's always available
And so I figured, if I just record this without an audience, you can have a similar experience too. Learn about what to do as autumn is making its appearance, and pausing the recording if you need more time. So this week I recorded the Autumn Kitchen properly, without an audience. At several points you can press pause, taste and really explore what happens.
The recording, the eight-page handout with the five spices, your two spice mixes and the recipes for autumn porridge and kitchari, it’s all here. For €27 you can have a taste of seasonal Ayurveda when it suits you, also next autumn when the season comes around again.
Have you ever tasted spices by themselves and which one is your favourite?
much love,
Rianne
