Changing of the seasons, do you feel it too?
The days are getting shorter and colder, the trees are shedding their leaves, having done their job. The rhythm of nature continues its cycle.
I used to hear people say, “the R is back in the month”, which meant it was time to take our vitamin pills. We pulled out all the tricks to avoid getting sick. When I was still studying and then working in the laboratory and spending about two hours a day on public transport, I regularly caught a bug. Good times.. everyone on the train blowing our snotty noses…
My grandmother also used to say to me, “Tuck your shirt into your trousers, otherwise you’ll catch a cold” when I went outside to play. Now, the cold itself doesn’t make you ill; viruses or bacteria are needed for that, as I learned in my laboratory training. But she did have a point, because from an Ayurvedic perspective, cold, especially around the lower back, creates (vata) imbalance. It lowers your resistance and makes you more susceptible to illness.
Fortunately, I hardly ever take the train these days and I usually skip the seasonal colds. By making the right choices, my resilience is high, even though I am a chronic kidney patient.
